RANGIYA: With the monsoon having set in, the citizens here are in for another spell of unhygienic living, as heaps of garbage soil the roads and add to the existing filth and squalor. While waste and garbage spilling out of bins have become a common sight, most of the streets present a deplorable sight, as the filth lay strewn all over the road owing to the slushy atmosphere, which is accentuated by the rains. A breeding ground for flies and mosquitoes, it is just a question of time before epidemics hit the small town. Stray animals too compound the problem by spreading the filth and generating disease. Despite awareness campaigns to no avail, lack of civic sense is evident as owners of hotels, business establishments and even domestic households dispose off their refuge by the roadside without ever caring for the consequences. As a result, the piles of foul-smelling rotten garbage inconvenience the pedestrians and commuters. The condition further worsens near the market areas, especially when the municipal board's drains become choked with accumulated filth. The local MLA, civic body and even the Civil SDO seem disinterested as they have till date failed to find an acceptable solution to tackle the perennial problem. Meanwhile, most of the residents are peeved over the apathetic attitude of the authorities and policy makers in taking pains to ameliorate the plight of the taxpayers by renovating the drainage system.
