The economy of Karbi Anglong is basically agrarian and hence the economic development of the district is dependent on agro-based activities. The Animal husbandry, veterinary and dairy development programmes come next to the agriculture. This provides alternative occupation to the jhumia families and farmers. The cooperative movement which started in Gujarat with AMUL as a flagship scheme has now spread to almost 200 districts including Karbi Anglong. Keeping the pace of dairy movement and white revolution in India, the district administration, Karbi Anglong under the smooth initiative of Dr M Angamuthu, deputy commissioner, Karbi Anglong district has decided to start a pilot project with formation of Karbi Anglong Milk Union Limited (KAMUL) to cater to the needs of the small and marginal dairy farmers and genuine consumers keeping supply (production) and demand (consumers, marketing) driven management project. It needs to be mentioned here that through the efficient collection of milk and higher profits to the producers and quality milk at affordable prices are the main USP for this project. This project is a refined form of cooperative principles with Joint Liability Groups ( JLGs). In which initially 500 litres of milk will be collected from the Dairy Self Help Groups (DSHGs) or primary cooperative societies at fixed rate, quality standard daily at the fixed collection point. After collection all that milk will be processed and pasteurisation will be done at the next stage of consumption. For the convenience of consumers here proper packaging will be done with 500 gram and 1000 gram packets. KAMUL milk parlour-cum-distribution centre will be opened at Diphu town for the consumers and selling price is made fixed for the same uniformly. In order to run smoothly, 25 SHGs have already been identified and each group is provided with 2 hybrid jersey cows with calf amount of Rs.75000 through dairy and animal husbandry department through SBI loan. All these SHGs will be integrated and notified as Primary Milk Producers' Society and finally integrated with (KAMUL). Necessary technical support has been availed by the district administration and department of Veterinary and Dairy department and it was financed by the State Bank of India to the tune of almost Rs 1.5 crore. JLG has been formed with maximum of 5 members who are experienced in dairy farming and they must have at least one dairy cow. It is worth mentioning here that Rs 50,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh per group will be provided and mode of repayment is equal monthly instalments for 3 years. For implementation of the project successfully required finances have been given by SBI and veterinary and animal husbandry department will take care of animal health care management and Dairy Department will take care of marketing of milk and repayment of loan installment. As a part of it, the project will start at Manja first and it will be extended in some feasible places like Silonijan, Howraghat etc. In second phase, value addition and processing with products like cream, butter, ghee, ice cream will be added into the attraction in the respective venues. It is hoped that soon Diphu residents in particular and Karbi Anglong in general will get quality milk at their doorsteps at affordable prizes and amiable quantity. It may be mentioned here that the "Operation Flood' started in the 1965 by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) will chalk out the blue print for the dairy industries of the country
