Rihan Daimary, Minister, PHE Department, Government of Assam inaugurated a piped water supply scheme at Amlighat, 8 km from here under Jagiroad LAC in Morigaon district on Saturday. Amlighat PWSS is situated at the foothills of Karbi Anglong district. The inhabitants of Karbi Anglong district suffer badly due to the presence of fluoride as well as arsenic in ground water and there is every possibility for contamination of fluoride and arsenic consequent to which there is a strong public opinion in favour of supply of surface water. The river Killing flows along the command area of Amlighat PWSS. But during the lean period, discharge of the river is not sufficient and hence to achieve the required discharge it was felt very much essential to construct an intake point on the river bed to accumulate the discharge in lean period along with the provision of up-flow roughing filter to reduce the turbidity of river water at the scheme. Amlighat is also agriculturally important for banana cultivation, besides production of 6000 litres milk daily. The Amlighat PWSS was sanctioned under ARP vide letter no PHED-271/2004/7 dt 25.8.04 and completed last year. The administrative approval amount of Rs 34.11 lakh is in the stage of trial running. The inaugural programme was organised by the Morigaon Public Health Engineering Division in collaboration with the Amlighat Janakalyan Samiti. Attending a public meeting, in his speech the PHED Minister gave on brief description on the newly introduced water supply schemes already installed in various places of the State. The Minister also informed about the administrative approval of water supply schemes and sanitation programmes in primary and secondary level schools of the State. Among others, Bibekananda Doloi, parliamentary secretary, PWD, Government of Assam and MLA, Jagiroad, Nandalal Upadhyay, senior Congress leader of the district, Apurba Kumar Phukan, DC, Morigaon also spoke on the occasion.
