- Plan draft targets 11 kg per capita fish consumption

The Planning Commission has called for intensive research and development (R&D) in the fisheries and maritime products sector to acheive the World Health Organisation's (WHO) recommendation of an intake of 11 kg fish per person annually. Based on the projected human population and considering that 56 per cent of the population would be including fish in their animal protein diet, the country will have to increase fish production to 63.10 lakh tonnes by the end of ninth plan.
