Sugar Cane Grower's Association (SCGA) has submitted a plan to the Government of Punjab for the setting up a 1000-1200 tons crushing per day (TCD) ethanol plant from sugarcane juice at Mamoo Kanjan, in district Faisalabad. The cost of setting up the plant would be around $10 million, which would produce around 2.0 mw electricity because of high pressure steam technology.
According to Javed Malik, convener of SCGA, the project has been designed with the sole aim to produce ethanol fuel direct from sugarcane juice to arrest the losses in antiquated sugar industry. According to research, invisible losses to sugar industry amount to about 30-35 percent annually from both industrial and grower's point of view.
As the prices of crude oil are increasing continuously, eating up foreign exchange, ethanol plant and co-generation of electricity would help reduce load shedding and save foreign exchange. The ethanol and co-generation plant, being small and efficient, the focus would be on development of varietal sugarcane varieties, ie early-maturing, middle-maturing and late-maturing.
