Two lakh saplings to be planted across the district
As part of improving the green cover, two lakh saplings would be planted across the district, said Collector R. Lilly here on Tuesday.
Plan
Addressing a consultative meeting held at the Collectorate, Ms. Lilly urged the officials of the government departments to identify places on their office premises to plant saplings and hand over their detailed plan to the forest department immediately.
The scheme to plant 50,000 saplings in schools has already begun in the district.
Tree guards
Officials in the education department should monitor the tree planting programme and get the status report from the concerned headmaster/headmistress of the schools.
Non-governmental organisations, self-help groups, banks, industries and educational institutions could be utilised for safeguarding the saplings by getting tree guards from them. Saplings of silver oak and teak could be planted according to the needs and geographical conditions. She said that the local body representatives and the general public should cooperate with the district administration in its endeavour.
District Revenue Officer S. Ganesh, District Forest Officer M. Senthil Kumar, DRDA project officer R. Ravichandran, Joint-Director (Agriculture) K. Rajan and other officials participated in the meeting, a release said.
