The federal government plans to unveil specific measures next week to halt the rapid devastation of the Amazon rain forest, a newspaper reported on Saturday. Known as the Green Package, the measures include the barring of new settlements in virgin forests, said the Rio daily,O Globo. The government is also expected to boost aid to small farmers to reduce their dependency on slash-and-burn techniques and to restrict credit in forested areas.
