Pulling up the State government for failing to check indiscriminate felling of trees, the Karnataka High Court has ordered that the authorities concerned should plant a sapling before felling a tree and take care of it for at least two years. A division bench comprising Justices M F Saldanha and M S Rajendra Prasad passed the order in the backdrop of the widespread public outcry against the mass destruction of trees by the authorities, particularly in and around Bangalore and Mysore. The judges were dealing with a civil appeal wherein, the Mysore Urban Development Authority desired to cut 124 trees for road widening purpose.
