West Bengal encourages child labour by fixing wages for juvenile agricultural workers---------- While child labour is banned nationwide, the West Bengal government has not realized it yet. Recently, the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government framed a fixed wage for juvenile agricultural labourers. The joint order by the agriculture and labour departments fixed Rs 61.35 as the daily wage. If the child is given a meal on site, the pay drops to Rs 58.69. West Bengal has 8.6 lakh child workers. Only Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar have more.
