The Chennai-based NGO, Coastal Action Network(CAN), has called upon political parties to come out with a clear policy to protect the country's coastline and the livelihood of coastal people. According to a "Fisheries Manifesto" released by the organisation, a new deep-sea fishing policy, centered around encouraging and developing fishermen to enhance their livelihood should replace the existing policy which provides "liberal concessions, subsides and incentives" for foreign vessels operating in Indian waters. This should be in addition to the strict implementation of the Murari committee report.
