Environment activists and groundwater protectionists from Arulpuram area submitted a representation to Collector G. Govindaraj on Monday asking the administration to close down those individual dyeing units and Common Effluent Treatment Plants in Tirupur cluster which are found violating the pollution control norms. In the petition, the activists had highlighted the names of four CETPs and seven individual treatment plants which, they alleged, were not following the pollution control guidelines in its letter and spirit. Treatment process P. Ramesh Kumar, one of the petitioners, pointed out that sludge disposals were not done properly in the effluent treatment process while attempting to achieve zero liquid discharge norms. “It should be noted that a few units in the area, affiliated to various CETPs, have been issued closure orders by Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board in the recent times for indiscriminate discharge of effluents. This vindicated the stance of the farmers and activists in the area that the pollution was high,” he said. The activists were of the opinion that the discharge of the dyeing effluents had polluted the groundwater in many areas of Tirupur knitwear cluster.
