Plea to ensure release of funds for water projects

The senior officers like Chief Engineer and General Managers should attend the camps of Jal Sansthan at block levels to ensure that a financial clearance for the drinking water projects is expedited. The Education, Potable Water, Sanitation and Student Welfare Minister Mantri Prasad Naithani said this while addressing a review meeting of the National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) here on Wednesday. He told the senior officials that budget for the schemes should be released from the NRDWP and the completion certificate should be provided to the State Water and Sanitation Mission (SWSM). The Minister said that the Peyjal Nigam should demand budget for the schemes under coverage head of SWSM. He directed the officials to clear the entire budget available for the projects of Peyjal Nigam, Jal Sansthan and Swajal in next seven days. Naithani said that there are 5,09,830 families in the State which are still deprived of toilets and the Uttarakhand Government is committed to ensure that in the next three years all the households in the State have the facility of toilet. He said that people had to defecate in the open in the absence of toilets which spreads diseases like cholera, typhoid and jaundice. In the mountainous areas the people are exposed to wild animals when they answer the natural's calls in the open. He said that the State Government gives a monetary help of Rs 12,000 to poor families for constructing toilets in their homes. The Minister directed the officials to distribute the diaries, poster and other material of Swachh Bharat Mission in the villages. The department officials informed the Minister that an amount of Rs 697.48 lakh is released for 61 drinking water schemes of Jal Sansthan. The State water and sanitation department has provided a sum of Rs 5195.71 lakh to Peyajal Nigam and Jal Sansthan. He was informed that the financial clearance of the State Government is pending for the Kola Patal drinking water project (Pauri) and the Resham Majri project (Dehradun). The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary Potable water S Raju, Director Swajal Soujanya, Managing Director Peyjal Nigam Bhajan Singh, Chief General Manager Jal Sansthan S K Gupta and others.
