PM for all-round development of Meghalaya

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has underlined the need for accelerating development of the North Eastern Region and assured a delegation from Meghalaya that the Centre would support all round development of the State. The Prime Minister expressed this view when Meghalaya Chief Minister Donkupar Roy, Deputy Chief Minister Timothy D Shira along with former Lok Sabha Speaker and now chairman of State Planning Board Purno A Sangma called on him in New Delhi yesterday, an official release said here today. While accepting the invitation extended by Roy to visit Meghalaya, Singh assured the Chief Minister that the Centre would extend all support for the all round development of the state, particularly in respect of those specific proposals put forward by them. In the memorandum, Roy sought the Centre's help for construction of a road network along the Indo-Bangladesh border and alternative access road to the Guwahati-Shillong National Highway. He also sought central assistance for making the state an horticulture hub, upgrading the Umroi and Baljek Airports and demanded a rail network along the Indo-Bangladesh border in the state.
