Manmohan Singh launched the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission which will now focus on the "urban poor' instead of "urban infrastructure'. The Rs 1 lakh crore mission was delayed by six months and faced several hiccups right up to its launch. The Mission sprang out of the Prime Minister's desire to convert Mumbai into a Shanghai and overhaul the infrastructure of India's cities to make them attractive investment destinations.
