Asom Water Resources Minister Bharat Chandra Narah informed the State Assembly today that Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh would take stock of erosion and other problems afflicting Majuli by paying a visit to the river island in the first half of April. The Brahmaputra Board and the Water Resources Department will raise the problems being faced by the residents of the river island before the Prime Minister during the visit. Citing a March 25 report of The Sentinel on the protection of Majuli from erosion, former Asom Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta wanted to know as to what steps had been taken by the Government for the protection of the river island, and what happened to the Rs 100-crore package announced by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for the protection of Majuli. Mahanta further said erosion is a major problem in Majuli. In his reply, Narah said both the State Government and the Centre are worried over Majuli. "In 1994, the Brahmaputra Board was given the responsibility of protection of the river island. The board repaired a number of embankments and erected porcupines. The Department of Water Resources also did some works on its own,' Narah said, and added: "The Brahmaputra Board has been asked to shift its divisional office located at Lakhimpur to Majuli.'
