Part of the PMC’s plan to involve experts was also to undertake beautification of the riverfront.
Elected representatives have expressed reluctance to give the go-ahead to the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) plan to rope in experts in planning civic infrastructure for developing cycle track networks across the city unless the municipal commissioner in person gives his assurance that quality work would be done. Part of the PMC’s plan to involve experts was also to undertake beautification of the riverfront.
“The municipal commissioner was not there at the meeting so we postponed decision on the proposal. We are not against appointing consultants for planning civic infrastructure but want an assurance of the municipal commissioner on ensuring good work,” said Ashwini Kadam, chairperson of standing committee.
She said the projects are very important for the development of the city and if they are not executed effectively, then it would send wrong messages to citizens.
“If the projects are not as per the expectations, then citizens would oppose any efforts in the future to make improvements, so it was necessary to ensure that they are good in the first attempt,” said Kadam.
The PMC would be spending lot of money to seek service of consultants and it should not go waste, she said, adding, “The cycle track project is very important for the city as it would encourage citizens to take up cycling if the infrastructure is good.”
The riverfront development project alongside Mutha river is an ambitious project that would change the look of the river and keep it clean, Kadam said. The committee chairperson said that the municipal commissioner has not attended the standing committee meeting for long and that was not in the interest of the city. “We would urge the commissioner to give a detailed presentation on the proposals being tabled in the meeting,” she said.
