PM's gift: water for all by 2004

Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee launched a scheme for providing drinking water to all villages of the country by 2004, the first phase of which would be operational in 833 villages with Rs 87 crore. Called 'Swajaldhara' the scheme was launched by Vajpayee from his residence through a video conference with one village each in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, where Chief Minister Mayawati was present.
