MANGALDAI, Oct 13: The organized armed gang of rhino poachers operating in the Orang National Park(ONP) taking the advantage of the recent incident of violence where all the security personnel have been engaged has again started their poaching operation which has been resulted from the killing of an adult rhino in the Park on October 7 last.
According to the officials of the Mangaldai Wildlife Division, the armed gang of poachers on that evening at about 5 pm killed the rhino with a single gun shot at a place near Jaoni camp along the river Brahmaputra and 15 km from Range office and took away its horn.
On hearing the gunshot the staff of the Park immediately carried out search operation but failed to locate the dead rhino on that night while the poachers managed to make good their escape with the horn.
However the carcass was found on the next morning.
Mention may be made here that with the killing of this rhino the total number of rhinos killed by the poachers has gone up to 6 since January 2008 while 5 rhinos met with natural death.
Of these killed 6 rhinos, the staff of the Park could recover three horns while 4 nos. of .303 rifles, 1 AK 47 rifle, 1 no. Italy made sophisticated pistol and 1 no. of .22 bore rifle along with huge quantity of ammunition were recovered till date.
Till date the staff of the Park with assistance from the police has arrested eight hard core poachers.
Though the staff of the Park despite their limited infrastructure facilities have been rendering their service for conservation and protection of the endangered species and continuing anti poaching operation, it is high time that the State forest department should give stress on creating an intelligence network to bust the organized armed gang of poachers.
