One of the nastiest legacies of Soviet rule in the remote and sparsely populated Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan is the lingering remains of the sites used for the testing of nuclear and biological weapons. Kazakh experts have recently become concerned about reports that deadly anthrax bacteria, buried during the 1980s on Vozrozhdeniye island in the Aral Sea, still remains a threat. Yet anthrax may not be the only danger on Vozrozhdeniye Island. The site was also used to test a cocktail of biological agents in the open air over a period of almost 40 years. Adding to the concern is the fact that Vozrozhdeniye may soon be an island no more.
