Oct. 4: The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Centre and Andhra Pradesh on a suit filed by Orissa, challenging the construction of Polavaram dam close to the border of the two states on the grounds that it would submerge hundreds of villages of Orissa. While admitting the suit, a bench of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and M.K. Sharma gave Andhra Pradesh and the Centre four weeks to submit their replies in the form of sworn affidavits. Orissa sought to stop the project, with an estimated cost of `9,265 crores, saying it would bring miseries to its people on border areas. The cost is likely to escalate to `20,000 crores due to the controversy, counsel for Andhra Pradesh told this newspaper. Even people of nearly 270 villages in Andra Pradesh, certain sections of its people and some political organisations within the state were also against the dam, Orissa in its suit claimed.
