PANJIM: In the wake of Supreme Court order suspending mining operations in the State, including halt on transportation of iron ore, Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has decided to hold a special meeting of its board of directors (BoD) in the first week of November, to once again decide on renewal of Air and Water consent of 107 mining leases.
GSPCB Chairman Jose Manuel Noronha told Herald that following the Supreme Court suspension on illegal mining in Goa, a special BoD meeting has been convened next month to re-decide on renewal of Air and Water consent of the mines. He said that the situation has changed after SC order.
The Board, earlier last month at its 104th meeting had decided not to renew consent to operate of all 107 mining leases, which had expired on July 31, 2012.
While categorising all 107 mining leases into three segments, the Board had gave permissions under Forest Conservation Act (FCA) and Chief Wildlife Warden (CWW) mandate, mandatory for those mines, operational in the forest areas including wildlife sanctuaries. At the same time it had decided to renew consent of those mines which have all valid documents and do not fall within the preview of FCA and CWW.
