Pollution suits resolved

Government ministries and agencies in Japan named in a 17-year court battle over air pollution along highways through Kawasaki have agreed to terms for an out-of-court settlement, sources said Wednesday. Their acceptance followed earlier approval of terms by the plaintiffs. The Tokyo High Court was expected to present the final settlement proposals today to parties to the class actions in anticipation of the settlement. In resolving the suits, the government is to appropriate a total of 400 billion yen for measures to improve the environment along highways. The government will also agree to find ways to measure the pollutant known as PM 2.5--airborne particulates.
