Congress Rajya Sabha member and former Union minister Janardhan Poojary has urged chief ministers of all states, and those of the Congress-ruled states in particular, to send proposals to the Centre seeking an amendment to the Forest Conservation Act providing for full protection to the poor families and regularisation of their encroached lands in the forests. He told reporters in Mangalore on Monday that thousands of families which had encroached upon forest lands, majority of them before the cut-off year of 1980, were facing crisis in view of the moves of their respective state governments to evict them from their lands and thus deny them their only source of livelihood. The Supreme Court had also recently passed orders endorsing the eviction.
