July 28: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in a report "Creating Values for All: Strategies for Doing Business with the Poor", offers strategies and tools for companies to expand beyond traditional business practices and bring in the world's poor as partners in growth and wealth creation.
At the India release of the report, UNDP resident representative and UN resident coordinator Maxine Olson said, "The private sector has a vital role to play in promoting and enabling more inclusive markets. Inclusive markets capture a business approach whose scale offer the best promise of bridging the gap between the constraints."
Yet the private sector cannot meet the needs of the poor nor overcome all the obstacles in doing business with the poor alone. The report outlines what businesses, governments, communities, NGOs, donors and international organisations can do to ensure the greatest good.
