The officials of different town administrations of the provincial capital have badly failed to carry out their duties during the Eid holidays, and that was why heaps of garbage were seen along the roads and in the streets across the city. Prior to Eid the officials of all the four towns had assured that sanitary staff would remain present and perform their duties to remove the garbage and ensure proper cleanliness in their respective areas. Complainants from various localities, mainly from the areas of Town-I reported that sanitary staff did not perform their duties and there was garbage dumped along the roads and streets. Poor sanitation had created great hardships for the people, who themselves were observed trying to open choked drains. It was reported that the clogged drain at Nishtarabad had submerged the local road and made movement of the people of the area very difficult. Residents of Gulberg also complained against officials of Town-III, that most of the sewerage lines got choked and the sewage was overflowing in the streets. Garbage was found lying at Bamba Road, Chamba Pir Road and near Ezat Khan Chowk, but the sweepers had yet to lift the garbage from the localities. It may be recalled that the sanitary staff of Town-I had already warned that they would not perform their duties on Eid as the concerned officials had not paid their dues for the previous year. Though, on the interference by the Town Nazim, Haji Shaukat Ali, the staff had agreed to perform their duties earlier, but they did not turn up during the holidays.The town nazim could not be contacted for comments, however another official said that he did not visited the areas, as it was the duty of the chief sanitary inspectors. However, he said the matter would be discussed and action would be taken against the concerned staff in the light of public complaints.
