Alleviation of poverty is one of the top priorities of the government, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Sunday. While speaking to various delegations from all over the country at the Prime Minister's House, he assured that the government was focusing on solving the common man's basic problems. He said the government had inherited the crises the country was presently facing but instead of blaming others, it was concentrating on ways to solve them. The prime minister said the government was working on the Thar coal project to overcome the energy crisis and agreements were being signed with the foreign companies in this regard. He said the oil crisis, which was linked to the international markets, was negatively affecting developing economies like Pakistan. The prime minister said that under the Benazir Income Support Programme, every poor family would be given Rs 1,000 per month as a financial support. The scheme will be launched on August 14 across the country and will benefit 3.4 million low-income families, he added. Gilani said utility stores were being set up in every union council to provide basic necessities on affordable prices. He said about 8000 CNG buses would run in major cities to provide cheaper travelling facilities and to help reduce pollution. app
