Fifty per cent of the population in the least developed countries is living on below $1-a-day income, according to a report released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development(Unctad). While the list does not include India, the method employed by Unctad indicates that the Indian government has underestimated the poverty level in the country. The current national poverty estimates are based on sample surveys of household income and consumption while Unctad says it is better to rely on national accounts.
