Poverty figures may mislead

Experts have said survey results indicating a decline in poverty and unemployment between 1999-2000 and 2000-01 should be viewed with caution. They said differences in the designs of the 55th and 56th National Sample Surveys may account for the perceived improvement in these figures rather than any real change in the ground reality. Between the two fiscal years, estimates of consumer expenditure have risen while those of poverty have fallen.
