The poverty line in a number of states is being reworked and the results show the situation in India's smaller states and Union Territories may be significantly different from what has been assumed so far. Take the case of the newly created states. The percentage of people below the poverty line in Jharkhand is higher than that in Bihar, while Uttaranchal and Chhattisgarh have poverty lines lower than those of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, respectively.
