Leading power companies, including Larsen & Turbo, Reliance Energy, Tata Power, Nagarjuna Construction, GVK Infrastructure and Sterlite Industries have expressed interest in taking up the construction of Rajpura thermal and Talwandi Sabo mega power projects in Punjab. The projects are proposed to be awarded to developers on build, own and operate (BOO) basis, through tariff-based international competitive bidding (ICB). For both the projects, Power Finance Corporation has been appointed as the consultant resulting in such a tremendous response. Sources in Power Finance Corporation said the 1,320 MW Rajpura coal-based project would involve an investment of Rs. 5,000-6,000 crore. The Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) has floated a special purpose vehicle (SPV) Nabha Power Limited (NPL) for taking action like ensuring linkages for coal, water and to undertake studies for transportation, hydrological, topographical, other studies and surveys necessary for preparation of project report. NPL would be transferred to the successful bidder at the end of bidding and on payment of development costs. The process for acquiring 2,113 acres had already been announced by the State Government.
