Power sector gets $250 mn ADB loan

The State has received an amount of $ 250 million from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) as loan assistance to revamp the power sector. Out of it $150 million is treated as policy loan, while the rest amount of $100 million is provided as investment loan. Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi disclosed this in the State Assembly today in reply to a question of Ananta Deka (CPI-M). Bordoloi also told the House in reply to Deka's question that there was an improvement in the power scenario of the State after the introduction of the power reforms programme. He said in reply to another question of Abdul Aziz (AGP) that the loan would have be repaid by July 15, 2023. In reply to Deka's question, he said that ADB loan was meant for retirement of defaulted bonds and loans, payment of dues owed to power and fuel suppliers, funding of cash shortfall of the sector etc. The Government of India has transferred the loan proceeds to the State Government as 90 per cent grant and ten per cent loan, said the Minister. So far, the hydel potential of the State has been estimated to be around 549 MW. Of its, 102 MW has been generated. If the supply of coal and natural gas could be ensured, the State will be able to generate 2,000 MW of power, he said. In reply to another question from Girin Barua (AGP), the Minister said that there were 14,62,823 power consumers in the State. Of them, 12,64,946 are domestic and 1,46, 792 are commercial. Under the Assam Power Sector Development Project, 1,75,927 consumers were provided with the digital meters till February 29 last, he said.
