The Maharashtra state government in a bid to control forest land, has demanded the power to divert forest land for non-forestry, commercial purposes be shifted from the Centre to the state under the Forest Conservation Act, 1980.The reasoning it has put forth is that the clearance for development projects at the Central level causes "unnecessary delays."
