Go green seems to be the new mantra in Bengal. At a time when leading power groups like Ennore Coke Limited is moving ahead with amazing speed in the power sector, it's time to take stock of the environmental milestones achieved by the group. Ganesan Natarajan, Whole Time Director, President and CEO of the company sets his sights on the green developments of the power group and makes a modest attempt to highlight the advanced technologies implemented in pursuit of a safe and pollution-free ambience. Q. Being the largest manufacturer of metallurgical coke In eastern India, Ennore Coke no longer needs any enumeration In the coke Industry of India. What Innovative steps have been Initiated in the adoption of latest technologies that enables your power plant to comply with Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)? The Haldia plant of Ennore Coke has adopted an ultra-modern technology to produce maximum power from waste heat produced by their coke plant. It has been estimated that 130,000MTPA of coke plant will produce 12 MW power. By controlling the specifications of the coal blend charge specifically for Sulphur and having very effective serpentine flue heating system with controlled air admissions and complete combustion of the volatiles of carbon with reference to the quality of the exit flue gas from the coke ovens, the letting out of the green house gases such as So2, nox, etc., in Non recovery coke making facility with co-generation power qualifies as CDM project and can go in for carbon credit. In fact ECL's plant has been approved by MOEF, New Delhi for further processing with the global players. This has resulted in setting carbon emission reduction points to the maximum extent. The state-of-the-art quality waste heat recovery boilers used in power production will emit little temperature into the atmosphere. Our plant is having effective cooling towers which can consume less water. Q. What are the Immediate plans of the prominent coke player to ensure a safe and clean environment mat can serve as a role model for other power providers In the eastern region? Our group has one of the modern technique plants which has only stamp charging facility that will increase the quality of the product and productivity. We have used innovations in the coal charging technique specifically using improved coal cake formation which in turn increases the heat flow to coal mass with improved convection and radiation effects that reduces the coking time and no dust is emitted out of coke or coal. This is one of the best coking periods in non-recovery coke oven and also in power production. Q. On the occasion of World Environment Day, how is the leading coke player gearing up to shake things up on the industrial environment of the east? On the event of World Environment Day, Ennore Coke would like to send a special message to the coke industry and other industries that by adopting modern and updated techniques, environment can be kept clean. The key power player will also get itself involved in technological developments and research and developmental activities as well to ensure that the spirit of green wave remains in the coke industry in times ahead. In this context with proper techno logical innovations and recycling technique with zero discharge of liquid effluents ensures a green coke and power plant. Q. Power forms the backbone of any Industrial development. How do you visualize the environmental scene In the power sector of the east? The power sector in the eastern belt of India is highly favorable and provides ample of scope to churn out sound business. With plethora of power plants emerging that provide plenty of scope for Clean Development Mechanism, we foresee the environmental prospects to be better in the eastern zone of India. Q. Could you share some details on the exciting future plans of your organization to generate environmental awareness Into the power sector of the east? Our organization is looking ahead to increase the production facilities and with subsequent implementations of the power plants. We intend to conduct awareness programs within the industry on the need of power plants to conserve the ecosystem and for economic benefits.
