Preparedness of agencies to deal with oil disasters reviewed

The 13th National Oil Spill Disaster Contingency Plan meeting here on Wednesday reviewed the level of preparedness of various agencies to deal with oil spill disasters. The one-day meeting, which saw 80 delegates representing various Government departments, ports, oil industry, oil exploration units and state maritime baords, was chaired by Vice Admiral Anil Chopra, Director General Indian Coast Guard. The Indian Coast Guard is the Central Coordinating Authority (CCA) for implementation of National Oil Spill Disaster Contingency Plan and the meeting deliberated on the problem areas pertaining to the preparedness level and the way ahead for developing contingency plans and mitigating systems to fight oil spill disasters, an official spokesman said here. The discussions during the meeting centred on the need for synergy and cohesion between all resource agencies as well as for the ports to develop minimum pollution response capability to fight oil spills up to 700 tonne within their area of responsibility. Two presentations on "Oil Pollution Legislation and Compensation" and "Oil Spill Risk Assessment and Contingency Planning and the Use of Information Technology" by guest lecturers were presented.
