The solid waste collection work carried out by private firms will now be monitored by officials to check their efficiency. The long tussle between the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and DWM, a private company which collects and dumps garbage from three zones of the city, will be sorted out by the installation of a tower which will monitor the work of garbage disposal by DWM. The tower will enable officers to see the amount of garbage lifted by DWM trucks, the number of rounds undertaken by them to dispose the garbage at sanitary landfill sites (SLF) and the per-day lifting of garbage in quantity. They will be able to view the updates on their computers in their offices. "We will install a control server connected with the sanitary landfill sites at Okhla and Ghazipur to get every-minute information regarding collection, disposal, complaint and status of each garbage dump," said a senior MCD official. The installation of the control server will monitor the functioning of DWM, which is one of the three private firms engaged in collecting garbage. DWM collects garbage from three zones, including south, city and central. "We used to receive regular complaints from residents of these zones regarding irregular garbage collection and unhygienic conditions in their area," the MCD official said. "After rounds of discussions with the company, we decided to adopt a system by which we can monitor its performance on a day-to-day basis," he said. However, the site for the installation of the tower has not yet been identified but it is likely to be erected at or around the Town Hall building. "Though the exact place has not been finalised, it will hardly take a week once the things are final," he said.
