The provincial governor has suspended the issuance of land rights documents here pending investigation into the destruction by fire of vast areas of a peat swamp forest. Yongyut Vichaidit said yesterday he had ordered the issuance of land owenership papers halted after bushfires caused great damage to Phru Khuan Khreng covering more than 50,000 rai in three districts of the province of Thailand. More than 10,000 rai of forest land were engulfed in flames. Local officials believe the fires were deliberately set to turn the area into a degraded forest land so it could be occupied and land rights documents applied for later.
