The Kochi city's green lung Mangalavanam is once again facing the threat of being smothered. Two proposals - one by the Kerala State Housing Board (KSHB) and the another by the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) - have come up for utilising the nearly 34 acres of revenue land in the vicinity of Mangalavanam where BPCL currently has its storage tanks. While the KSHB has proposes the development of an 'eco township' in the land, the GCDA is eying it for setting up an intra-city bus terminal. The proposed Suburban Railway Terminus could also pose the same kind of threat to the spot. According to environmental experts and forest officials, both the projects have the potential to adversely affect the fragile ecosystem of the mangrove forest to the point of wiping it out entirely.
