Rotary International President Wilfrid J. Wilkinson urged all Rotary Clubs to take on projects that promote literacy, fight hunger and disease and alleviate the water shortage plaguing much of the developing world. "Our work in these areas address the root of poverty and conflict and thus further the goal of world peace and understanding,"Wilkinson told at a ceremony to mark the successful completion of the "School Re-Awaken Project" implemented by the Rotary International District 3220 Sri Lanka. He said Sri Lankan Rotary clubs have performed well and in early 2005 Rotary Clubs in Sri Lanka launched a project called the School Re-awaken to help rebuild 25 schools destroyed by the tsunami. With all conflicts in the country Sri Lanka is performing well and there is no country in the world without conflict, therefore conflict resolution is an important subject for which they sponsor study programmes in developing countries, Wilkinson said. He thanked Rotary Clubs around the world, the Standard Chartered Bank and other corporate sponsors, government agencies and the School Re-awaken Implementation Committee. The Rotary Foundation also contributed US $ 1.8 million to this project. He said every Rotarian should take some leadership role to fight global warming and they are consistently supporting tree planting and other environment conservation projects in the world. He said they would work with projects for clean water, projects on health and nutrition and improve literacy in the world. International President also said that Rotary Clubs constantly seek new members and they would love to invite everybody to join the club and each club should at least admit one member per year. Sri Lanka's membership has increased by 10 per cent, he said.
