Lucknow: Endorsing health department's pledge to curb maternal mortality rate, the district administration and health team formalised a strategy to promote institutional deliveries. For this, they have decided to publicise provisions of Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) - a scheme sponsored by the ministry of health and family welfare, under the National Rural Health Mission.
Under JSY, the expecting mother is awarded a small amount of money to take care of her health, only if she delivered the baby in a government health unit. The amount has been fixed at Rs 1400 for rural women and Rs 1000 for urban women. Officials informed that so far, over 10,000 women have benefited from the scheme.
Issuing orders to this effect, district magistrate Chandra Bhanu said a sum of Rs 16.62 crore has been earmarked for ensuring quality reproductive and child health care. He emphasised that it was essential to check the high rate of maternal morality.
