Environmental groups struck an agreement with four natural-resources companies and two aboriginal groups to push the Canadian government to protect the country's northern forests. The groups hope Ottawa will eventually create a network of connected preservation areas in the massive boreal forest, which stretches across the country from Alaska to the Atlantic and provides breeding habitat for 30 percent of North America's birds.
