VARIOUS NGOs like S.A.R.F. (Smoke Affected Residents Forum), Rotary Club of Mumbai, Ghatkopar, Pestom Sagar Citizens' Forum, Go Green, Chembur Residents Forum, Petrol Dealers' Association, Rotaract Club of Mumbai Ghatkopar, Shanti Sudha Park Residents Association are staging a protest near Chedda Nagar flyover on Monday, March 24 at 9.30 AM. The issue is the heavy smoke which is enveloping the entire neighborhood of Deonar, Ghatkopar, Kurla, Chembur and even upto New Mumbai due to the garbage burning at Deonar dumping ground. In spite of a favorable Bombay High Court order a few years back, the menace continues unabated. Primarily, due to callous nature and laxity on part of BMC (Brihanmumbai Muncipal Corporation). The garbage is piled 18 meters high and is still growing. The methane, which is generated due to heat and decomposition, catches fire and causes smoke, which is highly toxic. The entire neighborhood has suffered this winter; however this menace still continues. The protest has been was spearheaded by a leading Cardiologist Dr Sandeep Rane who had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in Bombay High Court in 1996 (PIL No-1138 of 1996) and after a protracted battle, the city of Mumbai had heaved a sigh of relief when sweeping orders were given to BMC to contain and control any origin of fire and to maintain a fire tender to douse the fire and stop the entry of ragpickers to the site. BMC was also directed to erect a boundary wall to stop unauthorized entry. However, none of these measures were taken up with the spirit of the order. The citizens have suffered enough and are taking upon themselves to protest the apathy of the BMC and Sandeep Rane has filed a contempt plea in the Bombay High Court with a thousand signatures of residents who are voicing their grievances, to the Court.
