Movement of vehicles at Karandih-Hata Road came to a grinding halt for two hours this morning as activists of Jharkhand Disom Party (JDP) blocked the road as a part of the Jharkhand bandh.
The bandh call was given opposing the rehabilitation and re-settlement (R&R) policy, which was approved by the state cabinet recently.
Carrying placards and banners, the activists of the party assembled at Karandih, a tribal dominated area.
"We oppose the rehabilitation and re-settlement policy as it is against the interest of the tribals. We believe the policy should have been first ratified by the Tribal Advisory Council,' said Salkhan Murmu, the national president of Jharkhand Disom Party.
According to Murmu, plenty of industrial units have come up in this region after-independence. But, the tribals failed to get justified compensation and proper rehabilitation after being displaced from the place. "The rehabilitation policy seems to be a farce as it has ignored people's welfare. The policy is industry friendly,' he said.
Referring to the Samata Judgement 1997, Murmu said that it says 20 per cent of net profit should be spent for the welfare of the people. But according to this policy only two per cent of the net profit would be spent by industries for the welfare of the people in that area, which we are opposed to. The tribal outfit has decided to intensify agitation in future for revoking the R&R policy.
Meanwhile, reports of road blockade also poured in from Rajnagar, Seraikela and Manoharpur. The JDP activists put up road blockades at several places disrupting the traffic.
At Karandih, a section of the JMM party activists also pelted stones on heavy vehicles to stop them from plying on the road. The district administration had made adequate arrangements to prevent any untoward incident. Rapid Action Force (RAF) and armed police were deployed at various strategic locations within the steel city.
