Residents of the Da-Dhora farming area in Dergaon will take out a protest rally tomorrow against the move to set up a calcinated coke industry, work of which has begun about a month ago. Sources said that the industry was to have been established a year ago, but massive protests by the people of the area, forced the authorities to postpone their venture. The villagers are apprehensive that the production of the coke and other by-products from calcinating coke would be highly polluting and lead to health hazards and crop failure. More than 20 villages and 2000 families will be affected in case of pollution. As most of the inhabitants of the area are dependent on agriculture, the villagers are concerned that the effluents from the industry would pollute the soil and water and cause environmental degradation. Calcinating coke is produced by burning the sulphur content in coal so that the acidic contents is eliminated and the coal can be used in industries without damaging the equipment. Retired scientist of NETST, Dr PC Tamuly said that the calcinating coke industry need not be polluting if pollution control equipment are also installed.
