The National Board of Wild Life (NBWL) has decided to conduct a site inspection in response to the proposal from Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) to de-notify an area of 8 sq km at Rongcheng Plateau in Balpakram National Park in Meghalaya for exploratory uranium mining even as protests have been raging in the hill state over bid to tap uranium deposit in the area. A source said the NBWL had, at its meeting in New Delhi on April 12 last, decided to conduct a site inspection by one of its standing committee members along with state forest department officials at Balpakram National Park in South Garo hills district of Meghalaya in view of the DAE
