Province to act if water fears valid

If concerns that commercial bottlers are using up too much fresh water prove valid, the province will take action, Canada's Environment Minister Tony Clement says. 'I am concerned about making sure our aquifers are replenished,'' he said yesterday. 'We are human beings so we are going to extract from our aquifers. But we need to do so in a way that's sustainable.'' Premier Mike Harris last week said the province will examine whether bottlers should be allowed to take up to 18 billion litres of water annually without having to pay a fee. Provincial officials in Toronto have said the bottled-water industry uses only 1 per cent of water taken from aquifers and that there is no reason to worry that they will run dry.
