PS sets to track lions soon

Himanshu Kaushik | TNN Ahmedabad: Forest department has begun the implementation of Gir task force report. It has floated tenders to acquire 119 global positioning system (GPS) sets. These will enable the department to locate and manage lions better. This is the second step towards implementation of the report. The department commenced work on gene pools much before the recommendations were accepted. The state government constituted a task force on use of modern technology for conservation of Asiatic Lion in Gujarat through a resolution on May 25,2007. The task force recommend-' ed a GPS-based tracking system for surveillance, animal and vehicle tracking. It also suggested that a gene pool population be established at three places
