Pune, September 23 Pointing out the lack of sufficient experts in the Pune Tree Authority (PTA) not providing enough voice in stopping the loss of green cover, non-governmental organisations Pune Tree Watch and Parisar have urged Municipal Commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi to appoint an expert in the vacant post in the PTA as per the directions of the Bombay High Court.
"There are only few experts of recognised environmental NGOs in the PTA. The lack of commitment from other members of the committee is hampering efforts to curb the loss of green cover," Tasneem Balasinorwala and Sharvari Barve, PTA members and representatives of Pune Tree Watch, said in a letter to the Municipal Commissioner.
The Bombay High court has accorded Parisar to have one of its recommended members in the PTA, they said. The position has been vacant for long.
Since Ajay Vaishampayan, appointed following a recommendation from Parisar, recently resigned. The 30-member PTA has to have at least 15 elected representatives and a minimum of five experts, Balasinorwala said, adding there were actually only three experts on the body now.
