In a rare display of generosity, the Punjab government released the much-needed additional water supplies to irrigate parched villages and towns of northwestern Rajasthan. Interestingly, the move, which was initiated and executed by the Amarinder Singh government, had immediate spin-off benefits for the farmers of southwestern Punjab with Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot showing his gratitude by assuring them that his government was prepared to review the existing blanket ban on people from outside the state buying property, including agricultural land. If the ban is lifted it would benefit scores of Punjabi farmers and their relatives settled in the Ganganagar area.
