Quake jolts Kishtwar, Doda, creates panic

An earthquake of moderate intensity today shook Kishtwar and Doda districts, triggering panic among people. The quake, measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale, jolted the region at 1:36 PM, Met officials said, adding that the epicentre of the quake was 33 km north of Kishtwar and 75 km south of Kashmir. Panic-stricken people rushed out of their homes along with their children and spent about two hours in the open as the quake struck. There was no immediate report of any casualty or injury due to the tremor that shook Bhaderwah valley and adjoining areas. About 89 mild and low intensity tremors were felt in last 165 days. Abid Malik a resident of Doda said that his house located in Qilla Mohalla was totally damaged and it was risky to stay inside the homes. He, however, rued that no relief was given by the local administration till date. Another local Hans Raj of village Kholra of tehsil Bhaderwah said that due to continuous low and mild intensity tremors the cracks of the houses were widening and the people were scared to enter their houses. “We cook food in the open just like nomads, but till date no relief from the local administration has been provided to our village,” he added. Mohammed Ashraf Sarpanch of Nalthi Panchyat said, “The quake, 4.3 intensity recorded on the Richter scale was felt at 1.37 PM and we rushed out from our house towards open space.” In Doda the intensity of the quake was 4.4 on Richter scale. A tremor measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale had hit the area on Sunday. A tremor measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale was recorded at 12.25 PM on May 1 and after that some low and mild intensity aftershocks continued till date in Bhaderwah, Doda and Kishtwar area.
