The much-hyped High Voltage Distribution System (HVDS) to improve the quality of power supply is moving at snail's pace. The scheme was started long back but is yet to be completed in the four power distribution companies (discoms). Transco and four discoms have asked the government to extend the time for a third time. The government has extended the time to avail its guarantee to use unspent funds sanctioned by the Rural Electrifi-cation Corporation. Out of the Rs 3,772.549 crore sanctioned by the REC, Rs 1,550.574 crore has remained unspent. Another Rs 315.697 crore for regular rural electrification projects has not been spent.
